In June 1900 Philip and Frank Emmett, local brothers discovered gold in the mountainous region of Victoria around Mount William in the Grampians. When pulling up ferns, small deposits of gold could be found clinging to the roots. They were joined by their brothers Robert and Arthur and George Mason who owned the farm at the bottom of the mountain.
